Original paintings by Armand Berthe

Armand Berthe, who lives in Alès in the south of France, was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1925. Following studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Rennes, his early work was as a restorer, becoming chef d’atelier de restauration at the Louvre in Paris in the 1950’s. He was awarded the Diplôme d’Honneur de l’Art Libre (Paris) in 1956/57.

Armand paints in oil and combines use of vibrant colour with a loose style, reminiscent of both Jean and Raoul Dufy. He demonstrates an astonishing grasp of colour contrasts and has a compositional flair which is applied to three main themes: landscapes, still life and, with an injection of humour, the orchestra. For his landscapes, he has travelled widely and most of his paintings of India, Pakistan, Venice, and Thailand were sold virtually on completion. His more recent work in still life appears to show the influence of Braque (particularly where birds are featured) but the overall compositions are entirely identifiable as Berthe for they mirror the strategy of the landscapes. His orchestra paintings show a humour worthy of Hoffnung but again, with irridescent colour.

Since 1958 he has exhibited across France, in Switzerland, and on both the east and west coasts of the United States and has work in collections in France, Japan, Switzerland, Canada and the USA, as well as in the UK.
