Portraits by Marialuisa Marino
Marialuisa was born in Milan in 1945. She was educated in both Italy and South Africa and trained as a
ballet dancer at La Scala Opera House, Milan.
Marialuisa returned to South Africa in 1963 as principal soloist with the Performing Arts Council of the
Transvaal, the premier national ballet company in South Africa. In parallel with her ballet career, Marialuisa
studied art under George Boys at the Witwatersrand Technical College of Art.
Following the death of her father, she became actively involved in the family marble business, which led to
the development of her expertise in stone. Between 1976 and 1985 her design work earned 10 gold medals
at South Africa's premier annual exhibition, the Witwatersrand Easter Show.
Marialuisa's works are included in corporate and private collections in Italy, America, Hong Kong, Canada,
South Africa and England. She now lives and works in London and has received many portrait
commissions, including the Managing Director of Sotheby's South Africa, Reinhard Cassirer, and the
composer, Sir Malcolm Arnold. She has recently completed a portrait of Paloma Picasso, and a posthumous portrait of the late Princess of Wales commissioned by the London City Ballet. Prints of the Princess's portrait are available from the Princess of Wales Memorial Trust. (Please enquire from Quayside Gallery for assistance if help is needed).
