Original paintings by Magda Zimmerman

Magdalena Maria Anthonius Zimmerman was born in Delft, The Netherlands in 1959. She initially studied at the Gymnasium, Delft, and at the Academy for Physical Education in Amsterdam, expressing her creativity through dance, and the teaching of dance.

There came a point where this medium was insufficient, too limiting for Magda's creative talent. She had reached a plateau and needed something more, so in 1991 she enrolled to study art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, graduating in 1996.

The choice of this new direction has resulted in some spectacular paintings which communicate in an expressive and intimate fashion. Her subject matter concentrates on people from her personal surroundings, particularly focussing on children: their skin, eyes and their way of movement. Magda's style is experimental. Sometimes her works are realistic, portrait-like; on other occasions the subject is hardly recognisable, fading into the grain of the panel, distorting the image yet managing to retain an almost pre-Raphaelite quality.

Her work upholds the fine, well observed realism of traditional Dutch figurative painting, yet at the same time pushes it into an exciting new dimension, communicating with her new audience in an intense, powerful and to her, more honest way.
